The byway passes through the heart of five million acres of both the San Juan and Uncompahgre National Forests. Traveling the length of the byway will take you through high mountain passes and historical towns, and by waterfalls and acres of wildflowers. Don't forget to stop for lunch and shopping in downtown historic Durango. The 2nd half will cover Alpine Scenic Byway over Wolf Creek Pass and through Sun Valley, Colorado. Once we arrive in Salida you can soak your weary bones in the Hot Springs.
THURSDAY - Ride from Salida to Hot Sulphur Springs (200 miles). This entire trip takes place on two Scenic Byways. The first half is known as the Collegiate Peaks Byway. The byway runs through the Collegiate Peaks wilderness area, so named because of the 5 mountains over 14,000 feet of the Sawatch Range, named for the prestigous universites: Mt. Oxford, Mt. Harvard, Mt. Yale, Mt. Princeton, and Mt. Columbia. Also explore the area by traveling along the Clear Creek Canyon Road (CF 390), the Chalk Creek Road (Highway 162) and Cottonwood Pass (Highway 306). The area is filled with many lakes, scenic overlooks and the 13,000' Buffalo Peaks. The 2nd half of the ride is the Top of the Rockies Byway. The road seldom drops below 9,000' along the Top of the Rockies byway. You can also drive over Tennesse Pass or Freemont Pass, each over 10,000'. This is truly the Top of the Rockies! There are many clear mountain lakes and streams to enjoy as well. That evening we can soak in the world famous Sulphur Hot Springs which is walking distance from the lodge.
FRIDAY - Ride from Hot Sulphur Springs to Rocky Mountain National Park Byway along the Colorado River Headwaters. Once we enter the National Park this 48 mile stretch of road is one of Colorado's most popular routes, and it's easy to see why. Traveling the scenic byway, visitors get a tast of the variety that makes up the Rocky Mountains. Travelers go from mild, warm temperatures along the Colorado River to cold, frigid once above the trea line in a matter of minutes. Wildlife changes from elk to deer to marmots and bighorn sheet as the road climbs highes and green forests give way to rocky tundra with each passing mile. Allow 1/2 day to take in the sites. Our final destination is Denver and the end of the tour. The mileage is between 200 and 250 depending on the route you take. You can ride The Peak to Peak Scenic and Historic Byway passes through some of Colorado's most sought after vacation spots, including Rocky Mountain National Park. There is beautiful scenery and interesting history along the entire route from Estes Park to Denver. The byway is 65 miles long and should take about 80 minutes to drive. Or you can take the quick interstate route.
